The events, which are open to the public, give children from schools across the town (as well as Ipswich School’s own music students) the opportunity to take part in workshops and masterclasses.
This year’s festival will open on Thursday 5th October with a celebration in music to celebrate the 550th anniversary of Thomas Wolsey’s birth. This special evening of music and words will celebrate the life and times of Wolsey, arguably the most famous Old Ipswichian.
Acclaimed tenor Richard Edgar-Wilson (OI 1970-81) will bring Wolsey’s story to life, there will be performances by early music trio Hexachordia and Ipswich School’s Wolsey Consort singers.
On Friday 6th October the Chris Ingham Quartet will be joined by jazz violinist Ben Holder for Jazz Night. 33-year-old Ben is the most acclaimed and exciting jazz violinist in the UK.
Development Director at Ipswich School, Nikki Brown said, “We wish to thank Karl Daniels (OI 1944-53), for his generous support of this year’s event, and to our opening night sponsor, the Old Ipswichian Club.”
The Prometheus Orchestra, conducted by Matthew Andrews, will be performing on the evening of Saturday 7th October. The orchestra was founded in 2008 by Edmond and Liz Fivet and the violinist Pam Munks with the aim of bringing classical music to communities across Suffolk. Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony and Beethoven’s 5th Symphony will be part of the programme.
The Festival of Music will finish on Sunday 8th October with Evensong at St Mary-Le-Tower the Civic Church in Ipswich. The School’s Chapel Choir will take part in the service in a joint event to commemorate Thomas Wolsey.
