When Rugby fanatic Victor Tocca left Ipswich School in 2023, he carried with him not only fond memories, but also a clear ambition; to study medicine. A year later, he began his journey at the University of Southampton, making remarkable progress, and has recently commenced his second year. Despite having faced his own struggles, such as having to defer and resit, Victor spun this into a positive experience and it gave him lots to discuss in his applications, and at interviews. Earlier this month, lunchtime members of MEDSOC, a student-led Medical Society, aiding students who are interested in or pursuing careers in medicine, dentistry, or veterinary medicine, met with Victor, and had the opportunity to learn and ask questions about his time studying so far. He spoke about his placements within GP surgeries, and the ways in which ‘actors’ were hired to implement challenging behaviours, in order to see how he would handle the situation and offer him some hands-on experience in overcoming difficult encounters. He offered some amazing advice and insight to the students, stating that after about a year, he felt confident in being able to communicate with patients more naturally, as well as being able to ‘numb’ his senses when dealing with specific triage patient injuries, something a lot of the potential students said they found to be one of the most daunting parts of studying medicine. Overall, the students left the talk with more understanding, confidence and aspirations of attending medical school and working within a medicinal profession.
