As part of our celebration of 50 years of girls at Ipswich School, we have been featuring stories from female OIs each month. We have a fantastic news story for this month's piece as I caught up with Cricketer, Esmae MacGregor (OI 2015-22) who has just signed for Essex Women.
What are you doing now Esmae?
I’m currently in my third and final year at Loughborough University, where I’m studying International Business. I’m part of the performance cricket squad at Loughborough, which involves training twice a week, along with regular gym and conditioning sessions. In addition, I travel back home around twice a week to train with Essex (formerly known as Sunrisers). Balancing these commitments with my studies has been a challenge, but it’s also been hugely rewarding.
Could you tell me more about your involvement in cricket at Ipswich School?
When I joined Ipswich School, I’d never even picked up a cricket bat. Inspired by my older brother Joe, along with encouragement from friends and coaches, my journey began in Year 7 when my best friend convinced me to join a training session with Mr. Furmston. From there, I quickly found a passion for the game and started playing regularly.
I played in the U13 girls’ team during my first year, also representing the U15 side, then progressing to the First XI by Year 8/9. In my later years, my cricket really developed under the guidance of Sam Bennet-King (SBK) and Mr. Boje, who were instrumental in pushing me to reach the next level.
My greatest achievement at the school was our U18 national finals in 2018. Although we didn’t win, finishing second was a fantastic achievement, and the experience of competing at that level with such an amazing group of teammates is something I’ll never forget. We worked hard but always kept it fun, which is what made it so special.
Are there any particular teachers or stories that you remember from your time at School?
Being coached by Mr. Boje was a real highlight for me during my time at Ipswich School. The entire coaching staff, from SBK to Mr. Edmondson, were incredible and played such a significant role in my journey. Their dedication and belief in me were pivotal, and I truly wouldn’t be where I am today without their support and guidance.
Thanks so much for your time Esmae and huge congratulations from everyone at Ipswich School and the Old Ipswichian Community!
