The British-American drama was written by Neil Forsyth and directed by Aneil Karia (OI 1994-2001) and Lawrence Gough.
Old Ipswichian Aneil Karia attended Ipswich School between 1994 and 2001. He got his start in theatre at age 10 at Red Rose Chain, the Ipswich based theatre company whose artistic director and founder is Old Ipswichian Joanna Carrick (OI 1984-86). Aneil continued to work at Red Rose Chain through his teenage years, going on to study journalism at the University of Leeds before pursuing a career in filmmaking.
The new BBC series, The Gold is based on the 1983 Brink's-Mat Security robbery when gold bullion, diamonds and cash were stolen from a warehouse at Heathrow Airport. The haul of £26M (which now equates to approximately £93.3M) was the biggest heist in history at the time. The Gold has received excellent reviews from The Guardian and The New Statesman where reviewer, Rachel Cooke described it as, 'madly entertaining drama'.
In March 2022 Aneil Karia and co-writer Riz Ahmed were named Oscar winners for 'The Long Goodbye' in the Best Live Action Short Film category; other films from Aneil include ‘Surge’, ‘Teardrops’, ‘Beat’, ‘Work’ and ‘Ina’.
