Lest We Forget

As we wear our poppies and attend Remembrance events and services let's take a moment to remember two OIs from WWII.

Frank Gooderham (OI 1926-28) served in the 5th Gloucestershire Regiment. In May 1992 they were in retreat to Dunkirk and Frank and his comrades had to walk 95 miles in 83 hours with little food or sleep. The battalion, withdrew under orders and the survivors (which included Frank) were rescued from Bray Dunes by little ships. A total of 87 of their number were killed.

George Fenn (OI 1923-28) was a member of Broke House and before the war worked as the circulation manager of the East Anglian Daily Times and the Evening Star, in Ipswich.

After being called up he worked for 35 Wing Satellite Sector and in May 1944 he was a passenger on a Marauder B26 aircrft which took off from an airfield in Algeria. Three days later the plane was found crashed and burnt out on the side of a hill in Tunisia and all the occupants had perished. George was laid to rest in Tunisia.

George and his wife Mollie had a three your old son at the time, Mike Fenn who later went to Ipswich School (OI 1948-59). He grew up never knowing his father.
