AS Old Ipswichian Alastair Merrick contemplated his tee shot on the opening hole at Ipswich Golf Club, he recalled the last time he had played the Purdis Heath course.
“It must have been over 50 years ago. It’s amazing to be back.”
Alastair (school years 1962 to 1971) was one of 20 former pupils and staff taking part in the Old Ipswichian Golf Society’s first event for three years.
For Alastair, who moved to America soon after starting his career back in the 70s, it was lucky coincidence that enabled him to take part in the golf.
“I had a holiday booked to England and when I saw on the Old Ipswichian website that this golf event was happening when I was going to be in Suffolk visiting family I couldn’t not come along!,” he said.
After his round he added: “What a fabulous course, and I even remembered many of the holes! It’s been a great day.”
The event was won by Pete Law with a cracking score of 42 points. Pete (school years 1970 to 1977) thanked organiser Steve Runnacles for putting the event together. Steve (1963 to 1974) in turn thanked the OI Club for funding both the golf and food after the event.
