Medal success for former pupils

Ipswich School was delighted to hear of the medal success of our four former pupils who played for the England hockey teams in the recent Commonwealth Games in Australia.

Hannah Martin (who was at Ipswich School from 1998-2013), her brother Harry Martin (1996-2011), George Pinner (1998-2005) – who was also one of the men’s team captains – and James Gall (2006-2009) all came back with bronze medals after some fantastic hockey at the Gold Coast games.

Ipswich School Headmaster Nicholas Weaver said: “We are so proud of the achievements of these four Old Ipswichians – not only competing on the international stage, but coming home with medals as well. Bravo!”
Ben Edmondson, Director of Sport, added: “Not only is it an outstanding achievement to represent your country but to do so at a major tournament and with such success is something Hannah, George, Harry and James can be truly proud of. They are a credit to the school, a source of pride for the staff who worked with them and most importantly an inspiration to all Ipswich School pupils of what can be achieved when you have determination and drive to chase your goals.”

George Pinner and Harry Martin officially opened the Ipswich School Sports Centre at Rushmere in March 2015.  The Centre has three astroturf hockey pitches, including two in Olympic blue and pink, as well as facilities for netball, tennis, football and an indoor sports hall.
This season, six of the school’s boys’ hockey teams have picked up county trophies. The U11 boys from the Prep School and the U13, U14 and U16 teams from the Senior School all won county outdoor titles, with the U18 and U16 boys’ hockey teams also winning Suffolk indoor titles.

To have six teams excel in the highly competitive schools’ hockey competition demonstrates the depth of talent we have at Ipswich School, across such a broad age range. Many of those in our Senior School teams started their hockey careers playing in the U11 team at the Prep School, as did our international hockey stars George Pinner, Harry Martin and Hannah Martin. The last time the School won the county championships at U11, U13, U14 and U16 in the same year was 2008. The U13 team at the time was captained by James Gall.
