Andrew and his family have been known to me for most of my life. His mother was a member of the Towns family who had friends close to my father’s family since the late 1800’s. Both families lived not far apart in St Matthews Street, Ipswich. Towns keeping a well-known pub in that area. Bill Towns – Andrew’s uncle – was a great friend of my father’s and kept wicket for Suffolk in the 1948 period. Andrew (a year younger than me) and his brother Malcolm (a year older than me) both at Ipswich School where Andrew learnt to keep Wicket – all from his uncle. This carried on for the Old Ipswichian Club after he left the area.
His main career was a photographer based in London, where he met his wife, but still travelled down to play cricket and moved back to Suffolk in retirement and kept in touch.

My late husband, Michael Ronald Pemberton (Mike) (OI 1946-57), grew up in Ipswich and, like Anrew and his brothers, also attended The Ipswich School. Andrew’s family were friends with the Pemberton’s. The boys were playmates and Mr and Mrs Cockrill were especially good friends with both Mike’s mother Peggy and her sister Joan Sherman.
Mike eventually took up a lecturing position at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia.
In Mike’s absence, Andrew was always exceptionally kind to both Mike’s mother and aunt. He often visited them and helped them with his photography skills, especially with photographs of Mother’s special furniture. When Aunt Joan was eventually placed in care, Andrew visited her with his dog Fritz, much to her joy. We have a lovely photo that he took of Joan and Fritz.
Andrew’s career was in photography, especially ballet photography. His Christmas cards were always one of his ballet photos, mounted on card to share greetings. Over many years, I have kept them all.
Whenever we visited Suffolk, Andrew took great delight in showing us new aspects of Ipswich, so we usually walked around the school, admiring new developments.
Andrew was always exceptionally kind, considerate and a wonderful friend to our family. It was a great privilege to have known him, his wife Donna and his nephew Martin.
