We are very sorry to notify you of the passing of Timothy, who attended the School from 1952 until 1964.  

Timothy passed away in June, aged 80 years. 

We are conscious that some people who knew Timothy during his time at the School may not be in contact with us and we would be very grateful if you could pass on this information to those that you know. 

As is usual practice, we would like to place an obituary for Tinothy in the 2025-26 OI Journal. If you know of any stories or memories which you can pass on to us so we can put them together for the publication we would be most grateful. An actor I recall. Saw him as the Bishop of St Albans in Hadrian VII at Salisbury rep in c. 1971. He has had plenty of work.

So sad to hear about Tim Kightley.  He was in my small group of friends which also included Pat Ungless (OI 1955-63) and Adrian Moore (OI 1953-63), though I did lose contact with Tim after we all left school.

I was sorry to hear that Timothy died recently. We were contemporaries at school and in the same house, Broke. We were both House and School Prefects so were often together, although by the 6th Form I was on the science side and he on the Arts.

I remember before the 5th Form (or whatever it is called now), we had "declamations" where we had to read out loud a piece of prose or a poem (possibly by memory but I can't remember!), something I was pretty useless at. Timothy though had the ability to speak the words with amazing emphasis and meaning, so it was no surprise, after appearing in many school plays, that he went into the acting profession. Whilst we lost touch after leaving school, I looked out for his name in theatre reviews, and it is no surprise that he became a successful actor both on the stage, in films and on TV.

Anthony (Tony) Jackson (OI 1953-64)

News of the death of Timothy Kightley, a native of Derby, came as something of shock and I was saddened to hear that his distinguished career in acting has ended.  My memories of him are vivid and he became a trusty school friend and contemporary especially during the early 1960s when he was so successfully learning his craft with such school productions as 'Richard of Bordeaux', Volpone' and Kerry Crabbe's 'Doctor Faustus'. I believe he was also involved in a staging of 'Peer Gynt' which likewise was ambitiously mounted in the Great School, but earlier on, in the late 1950's. For me, what stood out about him was his urbane geniality, his conversational command and seemingly effortless control of spoken, and presumably written, language, as well as his tolerant, affable and unaffected demeanour. 

Advanced Level English at that time was held in Sherwood Block's Room 10 with Trevor Stratford directing it, a man whose own relatively radical liberality of thought and sheer width of outlook was to leave its mark, unmistakeably so in Tim's case. Memorable school productions paved the way towards joining the troupe at the Bristol Old Vic and the acquisition of a BA at the University of Leeds under the aegis of Professor Arnold Kettel, but in the interval before going up to Leeds, Tim and I went on a pleasant Norwich-based church crawl during the summer of 1963. Tim's website lists his subsequent achievements, in both film and television.
