In sport, records are there to be broken as skills, training and physical development all advance. Some records however, are tough to beat and stand for years which has been the case for the Ipswich School men's shot put record of 11m 50cm, held by Old Ipswichian Chris Jermyn since 1984.
This year Chris saw his 35 year record broken with a highly impressive throw of 12m 54cm, but, rather than disappointment, Chris could feel rightly proud for the new record holder is none other than his son Toby!
Toby's achievements at Sports Day earned him the Victor Ludorum Award and helped make the day special for both the School and his family who were there to share the moment.
It is unlikely that Toby's new record will stand for 35 years like his father's, as he will be aiming to better it again next year. In the mean time father and son can enjoy seeing their names next to each other in the record books.
Congratulations to Toby, Chris and the Jermyn family.
